Everyone knows what it's like to be tired, but those suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are more than just tired all of the time. Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome leaves its victims exhausted to the point that even a short walk around the block will send them to bed too worn out to even do what
it takes to live a normal life--and yet they used to run several miles a day. The big problem is that this exhaustion goes on and on, day in and day
out for months or even years.
In the mid-1980s it was nicknamed the "yuppie flu" and made headline news. This flu hit mostly young professional women and was often thought
to be just burnout or depression that was "all in their heads." Chronic fatigue syndrome is three times more prevalent in women than in men and is
most common in younger adults, with 90% of cases in the 25-50 year age range. Leading doctors into believing that CFS is not a real health issue,
but something born in the head of a stressful, emotional, and hormonal imbalanced women.
The fact that CFS affects more women than men is just one of many mysteries associated with the illness; and to date medical science has not
been able to develop a definitive test that can prove whether a person truly has CFS. The medical community still relies on a series of symptoms
to make a diagnosis. One thing that has changed since the 1980s, CFS is widely regarded as a physical illness, not a mental one. Today, The U.S.
Centers for Disease Control has declared chronic fatigue syndrome a legitimate disease that doctors should take seriously.
Personally, my CFS is the result of having Gastrodudnal Crohn’s Disease/ Gastroparesis/ Fibromyalgia. What I have is incurable, but not
beyond the ability to gain control over.
Unlike some people, the medical treatment I received left me in more pain and more exhausted than the illness themselves. As a result, I
had to make some dramatic choices. I could continue the medical treatment that was common, or choose an a more natural method of
treatment with less side effects. The choice was easy in the face of the reality that all the conventional treatment that I received failed.
And I was tired of being a Ginny-pig.
But in order to make a rational choice of how best to approach my illness and gain control over my symptoms, I had to study. I had to
learn all there was to be known about these disease. To gain control over CFS I had to understand what the experts believed caused CFS.
