Fibro Fact

I don’t know about you, but I am as clumsy as a bull in a china shop. I fall over my own shadow , and throw a glass across the room with out even making an effort to do so. I have broken so many glasses, that I know by plastic…… This simple truth is I have Fibromaylgia. I developed FB after a car accident 12 years ago. The first symptom I experienced after I recovered from the accident was tender feet. My feet became so tender, I had to cut foam in to pieces small enough to walk on and tie them to my feet just so I could walk to the bathroom. I was sent to a physical therapist by my doctor, who told me that I was wearing the wrong kind of shoes . So I went out shopping for new shoes and soon realized that most women shoes were hard and I needed something soft to stand on. I finally found a shoe that was soft to stand on, and have been buying Earth Shoes every since.

Although new shoes helped greatly, I began to experience pain and stiff ness in my calves, and weak ankles. I tried to continue my ministry as a Christian dancer, and for three years I suffered with the reality of the painful agonizing pain that hit me hard for days after each practice session , and after each performance. Finally I couldn’t take it any longer and had to quit.

But despite removing the strenuous activity of dancing, my leg pain continued to get worse. My calves would become so stiff and painful, that they would feel cold and numb, and soon I began to have pain so bad it would radiate up my legs. I made quite a number of trips to the ER because the pain was simply unbearable. Finally after a serious of test, it was discovered that the car accident had left me with four damages disk in my lower back, and a twisted hips. And although I had no pain in my back, the damage caused by the accident and the reality that I was not walking as straight as I should have been was causing my muscles to feel strained.

The diagnoses of FB did not come until after the pain had began to effect my shoulders arms, and every other muscle in my body. The problem was I could not get any pain medication to deal with my pain on a regular bases. The laws are very strict in Texas when it comes to pain medication. The only medical establishment that is allowed to prescribe pain medication on a full time bases is pain management clinic. Every other doctor in the state specialist or not is not allowed to prescribe more than a few pills at a time, or face arrested as a drug pusher. I did not learn this fact, until after I had basically accused my doctor of not believing that I was in such pain. He believed me, but his hands were tied. The only options available to me was to go to a pain management clinic, which was something I could not do because it was to expensive and I had no insurance.

Finally the pain and weakness got so bad in my legs that I began to look for a wheel chair, just so I could stay mobile. Despite the reality that I was going to been in a wheel chair soon if I did not receive some kind of medical intervention, I could not get any medical help to easy the pain or stop the weakness in my legs. As a result, I was left with two options, take the easy way out as my mother did when the FB pain became to much for her to bare and end my painful life, or I could look at my life with a more positive outlook and once and for all realize that I had the power with in me to deal with my pain more constructively. With my faith in the Lord as the guiding force in my life, I began to look for the answer to my pain through a natural treatment process.

Adding b12 ( which heals nerve ending) magnesium ( natural muscle relaxer) began to easy the cold feeling in my calves. Soft music for relaxation, aroma therapy for stress eased the stiffness in my legs. Warm baths and heating pan, helped easy the pain. Ankle braces, help to straighten my unstable ankles enabling me to begin walking. I can only use my treadmill every other day and only for 15 min, anything more puts to much strain on my muscles. But each and every day I feel more and more in control of my pain, it no longer controls me or my actions. And in the process, I have begun to lose weight, putting to rest the conception that you can only lose weight through aerobic exercise and muscles building exercise.

There is a lot to be said for taking a more active hand in easing your pain. And although, chronic pain still is an active part of my life, my pain levels are know at livable levels with out pain medication. Or for that matter surgery to fix the damaged disks in my back, and strengthen my walking stride.
